Sun Damage: How to Prevent, Repair, and Protect Your Hair

Hair Mask, conditions, hats, and umbrellas will protect your hair

When people discuss sun protection, they frequently focus on skincare while ignoring hair care almost entirely. But it turns out that your hair is just as sensitive to the sun as your skin—it just doesn’t have the same nerve endings to alert you. You may identify the “symptoms” of sun-damaged hair: The simplest way to tell is if it has become dry or brittle as a result of exposure. You may notice that sun-exposed hair breaks easily.  Alternatively, it could be so puffy from dehydration that it’s practically unstylable. Dark hair often lightens in the sun. Like getting a tan, society has deemed this a positive thing visually. It’s certainly more like a burn—a sign of discoloration and dehydration caused by overexposure. This is also true when you dye or bleach your hair.

But don’t worry: you can easily reverse sun damage to your hair. For a month or so after sun damage, the hair requires extra care, primarily in the form of additional conditioner. If the strand is frayed by UV rays, the follicle will continue to produce healthy hair cells. But, for the hair, here are some ways to prevent sun damage and a few steps to restore it to its healthy, styleable state.

How to Protect Your Hair from Sun Damage (and Scalp, too):

  • Make use of UV-filtering Products: When shopping for hair styling products during the summer and winter seasons, look for ones that also provide UV protection. You can kill two birds with one stone by protecting your hair while also achieving the level of hold you require to style it.
  • Apply a Sunscreen Spray: If you have medium-length or long hair and your scalp is exposed to the sun in any way, such as thinning, you should still apply sunscreen to it. You can reduce the mess of sunblock-lathered hair by spraying sunscreen on specific areas of the scalp, then massaging it in at the root like you would with dry shampoo. This should help you avoid getting too much hair in your coif.
  • Use a hat or an Umbrella: Shield your hair with a hat or an umbrella. These two are the best options to cover and protect your entire hair and avoid sun damage.

Tips to Repair Sun-Damaged Hair:

  • Using hair masks: If your hair has become sunburned, it may be in urgent need of nutrient content. Hair masks will provide the nourishment your hair requires for repair. It will not only correct the fizziness, brittleness, and dryness, but it will also protect you from further harm.
  • Use of appropriate shampoos and conditioners: Using the right shampoos and conditioners can help your hair repair faster. You can, for example, select shampoos that contain essential oils. You can choose between argon and coconut. Not all conditioners and shampoos are suitable for use on your hair. Use the ones that are suitable for your hair type.
  • Massage the scalp: Self-massaging your scalp will aid in the repair by increasing blood flow. While shampooing, simply massages your scalp with your fingertips. The key here is to be gentle, or you will damage the roots.
  • Avoid additional harm: As long as your current condition persists, avoid going into direct sunlight. To avoid further damage, eliminate heat styling, hair straightening treatments, hair gel styling, bleaching, and hair coloring products that contain harmful chemicals. Choose styling techniques that do not result in significant damage, such as no-heating styling.
  • Keep hydrated by using a moisturizer: The main cause of hair loss and weak hair is a decrease in the water content of the hair. Make use of shampoos with built-in moisturizers. Alternatively, moisturizers can be applied directly. Consume water and stay hydrated, as dehydrating yourself will not make things any simpler. Drink at least 8-18 glasses of water per day.
  • Use a wide-toothed comb: Instead of using a regular hair comb, use a wide-tooth comb to avoid breakage. It will remove the tangles without having caused further splitting. Resist over-brushing as well.
  • Treatments with regenerating oil: Salons provide oil treatment services that can help you restore your natural hair. Alternatively, you can make your own oil treatment at home by combining warm olive oil or coconut oil with vitamin E capsules. Apply the mixture to your scalp with your fingertips and gently massage it in. Do it twice or three times per week and you’ll see results very quickly. These are some suggestions for dealing with sun-damaged hair. If your hair condition does not improve, you should see a doctor right away.
